Known as the land of high passes, Ladakh is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Kashmir. With more tourists visiting the area every year, Border Roads Organisation has now decided to make it accessible in all weather conditions.
“The cold desert region will now be accessible by a double-lane motorable road from Manali in Himachal Pradesh via Zanskar in Kargil district,” a spokesman of the BRO said.
Earlier, the Srinagar- Leh highway used to shut down in the winter due to heavy snow. Due to this, the area became inaccessible for a number of months
But with the double-lane road in place, things will change for the better. BRO’s project Vijayak has built this road network by cutting the tough mountains and building a motorable road. The Lahaul Valley had been widened and turned into a motorable road by the persistent efforts of BRO men using high-end machinery.
It will provide a strategic advantage in the Kargil region which witnessed the wrongdoings from the Pakistan side in 1999. The new route will also enhance inter-state connectivity and bring socio-economic justice for the region, the BRO spokesperson said. “This will be the third road to Ladakh region after Srinagar-Leh and Manali via Leh routes,” he added.
As per the latest news reports, the Darcha-Padum link will be improved and widened further by next summer, when work on the roads will resume again.
Now you can book your tickets to Ladakh anytime during the year. 😄
